Motor Trade Insurance

Motor trade cover is a specialist form of motor insurance designed to meet the requirements of motor traders in the United Kingdom.

The cover allows the policyholder to drive both their own vehicles for business purposes and social and domestic and pleasure use and also vehicles not owned by the policyholder but being driven by the policyholder for the purposes of the motor trade.  Within this definition employees and other named drivers will also be entitled to drive certain vehicles.  Employees will generally be restricted to vehicles driven in connection with the business, but this may be extended to include SDP use in respect of certain vehicles.

Partners and spouses, may also be included under the insurance to drive the policyholder's own vehicles.  Care must be taken to ensure that such vehicles are in fact the property of the policyholder, and this is particularly relevant when the policyholder is a limited company.

It is a common misconception that motor trade insurance is a cheap way of obtaining private car insurance and that if you hold a motor trade insurance policy you are automatically entitled to drive any vehicle and are fully insured in respect of damage to the vehicle and any damage caused by a vehicle.
